THE C3S MODEL FOR COMMUNITY-BASED, INDEPENDENT CHARTER SCHOOLS
The C3S Model for Independent, Community-based Charter Schools has been in the making for many years and is still a work in progress. It is based on lessons gleaned from the startup experiences of many independent charter schools and from countless visits to schools and interviews with school founders and school leaders. The model is a mix of the pragmatism learned from successful startup charter schools and the idealism that we as educators have of what a great education could look like in the 21st century.
This document provides an overview of lessons learned in community-based charter schools and includes sections on governance, leadership, advocacy and community engagement geared towards creating and maintaining a dynamic and innovative environment in our schools.
It is not, however, a complete step-by-step manual on how to start or operate a charter school and, in keeping with the regard that C3S has for individual school autonomy, the document avoids prescription and focuses on process.
This version of The C3S Model for Independent, Community-based Charter Schools is a draft for review by educators and education advocates. We solicit your critical feedback.
