On November 2nd, the Education and Youth Committee of Brooklyn's Community Board 3 invited parent coordinators and parent leaders, including members of the executive boards of CEC 16, 13, and 14, an from all traditional district, charter and private schools from CB 3 to a Meet and Greet event at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza. Close to 50 parent leaders, representing 37 schools including many independent charter schools such at CPCS, Unity Preparatory Charter School, TFOA, Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School, and Brooklyn Charter School, were in attendance. This was a rare opportunity for parent leaders to meet one another as well as make connections with Elected Officials and community leaders in CB 3, which covers all of Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn.
Hosted by Oma Holloway, Chairperson of the Education and Youth Committee and C3S Family and Community , and Felicia Alexander, CB 3 Member and Parent Advocate for Coalition for Education Justice, parents saw a unified message: that parents need to be supported, and that the community board is a resource for ALL schools. This was articulated by Council Member Robert E. Cornegy, Jr who served as the keynote speaker. As a father of six children, Council Member Cornegy shared that he has the distinct honor to have had a child in public, private, charter, special needs, and gifted schools/programs. He stated, “it’s time for all of us in Community Board 3 to fight for quality schools, regardless of whether they are district or charter or private." Cornegy followed up by encouraging parents to sign children up for the Gifted and Talented test. Unfortunately, there are no G&T programs currently in Bedford Stuyvesant.
In addition to the Council Member, parents were greeted by representatives from the NYC Public Advocates Office, Assembly Member Annette Robinson, and Kings County District Attorney Ken Thompson. Community Board 3 Chairperson, Tremaine Wright, also gave greetings and commended the work of the Education and Youth Committee and encouraged parents to utilize the resources in the room and the community board office.
