La Cima Elementary Charter School Fifth Graders are going to Paris!

Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn-based charter school, La Cima Elementary Charter School will be taking 12 fifth graders to Paris, France during their Spring break in April. What began as an art project and partnership with a resident artist from Paris has become an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local Bedford Stuyvesant youth.

In October 2015, La Cima engaged in a partnership with EDAAV (Ecole d’art au village) in which 5th grade students worked with resident artist, Sebastien Cailleux and his son, on a project called “Paris, New York: Imaginary City.” Students created artwork using pastels and transformed their art into a digital exhibition on Apple iPads. They participated in multiple field lessons to the High Line, Central Park, the New York Public Library and the Apple Store to develop their ideas about the two cities. Their artwork is set to be on exhibition at the New York Public Library, as well as Paris City Hall and the Hotel de Ville Metro Station in Paris.

In less than 2 weeks, a group of those same La Cima 5th graders are headed across the Atlantic for a whirlwind week of cultural exchange and VIP treatment in the “City of Lights”. Accompanied by seven staff members, the La Cima scholars will connect with the Black Paris story, explore some of the world’s most famous museums and sites, meet the Mayor of Paris and the US Ambassador to France at the US Embassy. La Cima scholars will also connect with their Parisian student counterpart who also created their own art projects with a resident artist from New York City.

This trip is not only an extraordinary opportunity for this group of young scholars, but it also emblematic of the experiences that independent charter schools seek to provide for those they serve.
